2009 was a year of transition for me, I moved back to Boston after living in Washingtion, DC for 2.5 years. I took A LOT of photos when I was in DC, I was pretty much acting like a tourist everyday. I took this photo in the Tivoli North/Columbia Heights area in DC, which is was one of the "up-and-coming" neighborhoods in DC.

I selected this particular photo as one of my favorite shots throughout 2009, because I just love the colors on the row houses against the clear blue sky.

NESOP Architectural Photography Class

I am really happy with the class at New England School of Photography (NESOP). I met a new group of creative photographers and instructor, learned about photography techniques and composition, and Photoshop!!!

But more importantly, it gave me reasons/excuses to explore Boston with a new set of eyes (like a tourist!) and take "amazing" photos.

I still have more to learn and hope to continue my photography track and share more photos with everyone.

Small Big House in Medfield, Mass

I am on a mission to take a few more architectural photos for my photography class's final presentation that is due on Thursday!!!

I decided to include some residential architecture in the presentation and photographed this particular house that was recently renovated. It took a couple attempts to get the photos done due to the overcast weather!! I am happy I was able to get this shot in today's rain! Daylight Saving Time didn't help either. It got dark so early now, like around 4-5pm.

In my not-so-architectural terms: This house was built in 1930s with a second floor addition from 1960s. The current owners of the house hired Single Speed Design for the renovation. The renovation was mainly involved with completely rebuilt the second floor to a much more open and eco-friendly area. They also rebuilt the front main entrance to match the openness of the second floor. Now, this home looks modern and simple, and it is very open and bright inside and out.

I have been taking a Architectural Photography class that is taught by Keitaro Yoshioka. The class is wonderful, I am learning a lot from Keitaro on style, composition and PhotoShop techniques!! For our last class next week, we will be presenting our top ten photos that we took since we started our class. I think I will be including this panoramic photo that I took recently at the Boston Public Library.

For some reason, I have never been to the McKim Building of the Boston Public Library! I always go in the library from the newer side. So it was amazing when I stepped in the old section of the library. I took the photo from the Main Stairs at the Entrance Hall. The tall ceiling, mural paintings, and the sculptures were totally mesmerizing. I took a few shots here and made this panoramic photo that capture the dramatic atmosphere.

The McKim Building reminds me the Great Hall at the Library of Congress. I cannot wait to go back to DC to take more photos at the Library of Congress. It is one of my favorite architectural building in DC.

Cheng & Tsui Joins The Fun at BCNC Street Fair

Cheng & Tsui is an independent publisher and distributor of English and multilingual educational materials about Asia. They had their company booth setup as part of the BCNC Street Festival in Septebmer. They used one of my photos from the event for their newsletter.

Cheng & Tsui Joins The Fun at BCNC Street Fair
On September 26th, Cheng & Tsui was on hand for the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center's 24th Annual Oak Street Fair. Attendees were greeted with sunshine and a cool breeze at the corner of Oak Street and Shawmut Avenue for the yearly event. Over 1700 children and adults made the rounds between attractions that included games, art projects, cultural performances and community resources.

Cheng & Tsui ran a very popular Chinese-color bingo game for the kids while discussing our materials with their parents and interested passersby. We would like to thank the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, our fellow exhibitors, and everyone who stopped by to say hello for making the day such a success!

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Boston.com is holding a photo contest with the theme: Pink. I am really excited about that Boston.com chose this appropriate theme and dedicate for breast cancer awareness.

BTW - 2009 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Boston, MA is on this Sunday, October 4, 2009.

I selected this photo of a pink rose from the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden in DC. The Hillwood is a hidden jewel in DC and probably one of my favorite museum in DC. It is a bit off-beaten-path, locates around the Van Ness area in DC.

I think of the Hillwood in two parts, the mansion/museum that was once owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post which contains her personal extensive Russian art collection and other. The second part is the outdoor area that consists an amazing Japanese garden, rose garden and indoor green house.

You should definitely check it out if you had enough of the Smithsonian.

Over the weekend, I volunteered at the 24th Annual Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Cente (BCNC) Oak Street Fair with National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) Boston.

Here's a recap for the day:

On Saturday September 26th, 2009 over 50 volunteers participated in the 24th Annual BCNC Oak Street Fair. NAAAP Boston has been working with BCNC to co-organize and recruit volunteers from NAAAP, Tufts University, Deloitte, and BCNC. Thanks to all the volunteers and their efforts, the fair a huge success.

The Oak Street Fair is a community event for children and families to come for some fun and informative resources. It’s open and free to the public. The fair featured games and activities, community resources and information, arts and crafts, entertainment, health screening and education, food, and the famous watermelon eating contest.

Volunteers in the morning started the nice sunny Saturday grabbing a light breakfast provided by BCNC while checking in and getting their tasks. Volunteers then helped to set up community tables, sponsor tables, welcome tables, food stands, the games area, and the performance area on Oak Street as well as on the playground area of Josiah Quincy School. After setting up, volunteers worked with their respective group leads to get instructions on what to do at their assigned tasks. The Oak Street Fair started at 11 AM with hundreds of families and kids from the Chinatown area taking part in all aspects of the fair. During the fair volunteers made cotton candy, caramel apples, helped pass out community information, cut watermelons for the watermelon eating contest, helped out at sponsor tables, coordinate the kids games, and much more. The Oak Street Fair also had performances every half hour that included dance performances, Tai Chi and Kung Fu demonstrations, and the Lion Dance parade. The fair ended at around 2:30 PM with the last performance and watermelon eating contest, after which volunteers helped clean up the fair.

My exhibit location is on the 3rd Floor and in space 12 (White core wall around the corner from the elevators.)

The 38th Annual Labor Day Art Show at Glen Echo Park takes place in the historic Spanish Ballroom. The free event, sponsored by the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, runs from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday through Monday. The show features the work of more than 200 artists—both adults and children—from the mid-Atlantic region. Many artists have a connection to the Park, either as students or teachers. Artomatic is a month-long multimedia arts event that draws together visual artists, musicians and performers and brings their work to the community without charge.

It was originally conceived as a way to break down the geographical and social segmentation of the Washington arts scene, to bring art directly to the public and to build cohesion among artists. The city's ongoing development in recent years has diffused the arts community by breaking up pockets of artist studios. In addition, local artists are sometimes overshadowed by national blockbuster shows and federal landmarks. Computer C.O.R.E. is holding its 5th annual Wine & Chocolate Fundraiser on Saturday, March 8th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at The Athenaeum, owned and operated by the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association (NVFAA), which is located in the historic Old Town Alexandria at 201 Prince St.

Computer C.O.R.E. is a non-profit organization whose program promotes the realization of better opportunities through basic computer skills training. CORE's program is offered to un- and under-employed adults of Northern Virginia who have little or no experience with computers.

Federal Reserve Art Show

The Art Show will be exhibited on the Concourse level in the Eccles Building at the Federal Reserve in Washington DC between February 19 and April 18, 2008.

It is also part of the Federal Reserve's Cultural Exchange with the People's Bank of China (the central bank of the People's Republic of China).

The exchange is tentatively planned to begin in March 2008, the artwork will be displayed for two to three months in three separate exhibitions at People's Bank of China offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xian.

Welcome to my first post here!

This is very exciting. I am one of the participants in Artomatic 2007.

Artomatic, the Washington, D.C., area’s eclectic, engaging — and occasionally even eye-popping — arts extravaganza is back this spring and promises to be more of a draw than ever before.

Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic is the region’s one-of-a-kind multimedia art featuring more than 600 regional artists and performers. The free five-week event, to be held April 13–May 20, will feature nearly 90,000 square feet of paintings, sculptures, photography and other creative work.

6th Floor - On the "Blue Line" at Corridor X (on the Corridor C side)
Turn left when you enter the 6th floor reception/front desk area, walk down Corridor C, pass the Film/Video Room on your left, and Corridor X is on your right.

Stop by for "MEET THE ARTISTS" event on May 4th (Friday) from 6pm to 10pm. I will be there to meet in person!
